St. Giles Junior Summer Camps.
In 2010 St. Giles International will be running British Council accredited Junior Residential Summer Camps at King’s School, Canterbury (11th July to 15th August, ages 8 to 17), Kingston University (4th July to 15th August, ages 14 to 18), The University of Nottingham (27th June to 8th August, ages 10 to 17), Oxford Brookes University (27th June to 8th August, ages 14 to 18) and Southampton Solent University (4th July to 8th August, ages 12 to 17).
We are currently recruiting the following: Residential Centre Managers, Residential Directors of Studies, Residential Teachers and Non-Residential Teachers. Activity Managers and Activity Monitors can receive a full job description from shayward@stgiles.co.uk
Classes have a maximum size of 15 students (12 in Canterbury) and will range from beginner to advanced level. Lessons will be based on modern mainstream course books and supplemented with resources used by St. Giles International in its main schools. Copiers, internet access and resource packs are available for teachers.There is also a full activity programme for the students including one full day and one half day excursion a week. Academic support for teachers is provided by the Director of Studies. Teacher development sessions are also run and we hope that teachers can use their experience with us to further their future prospects and abilities.

Centre Managers
Main Duties
The Centre Manager will report to the Director of Junior Courses, St. Giles International. The Centre Manager has overall responsibility for the summer camp and will oversee and plan staff rosters and the daytime and evening activities programme, seven days a week during course operation dates. This will involve careful liaison with staff to ensure they are properly informed of the itinerary. The Centre Manager is also responsible for producing a weekly roster and managing the finances of the summer camp.
Working Hours
The Centre Manager works 6 days out of 7 each week.
Director of Studies
Main Duties
The DOS will deputise for the Centre Manage in his / her absence and will be aware of all emergency procedures. The DOS will timetable teachers to the appropriate classes, ensure the quality of teaching by observations and training sessions, monitor materials and resources and maintain British Council standards.
Working Hours
The Director of Studies works 6 days out of 7 each week.
Residential Teachers
Main Duties and Working Hours
The standard teaching/supervisory programme involves 48 hours each week, comprising teaching of twenty 50 minute lessons each week over 5 mornings or afternoons and the balance in supervisory duties in the residence, escorting students on excursions, participating in sports and activities, dealing with students' needs generally as they arise and non-teaching academic duties as well as attending staff meetings and teacher development sessions. 29 hours is allocated for supervisory duties and 2.3 hours for meetings etc. Staff will have one day off a week, normally a Sunday or a Thursday.
During the interview process, applicants can indicate whether they wish to be included in the list of staff who would like to be offered additional work to maximise earnings. This will enable the Centre Manager to take this into account as early as possible in the planning of weekly timetables. Contracts with a reduced number of supervisory hours (21 hours) at a reduced rate of pay are also available.
Non-Residential Teachers
Main Duties and Working Hours
The standard non-residential teaching/supervisory programme comprises twenty 50 minute lessons each week over 5 mornings or afternoons. The standard timetable of 37 hours a week also offers an additional 19 hours of non-teaching/supervisory duties each week although this is not guaranteed. 1.3 hours at the supervisory rate is paid as an allowance for staff meetings etc. There may be variations on this format with teachers undertaking additional teaching or non-teaching/supervisory duties as available on either a regular or occasional basis and by agreement with the Centre Manager. During the interview process applicants can indicate if they would like to be included in the list of staff who would like to be offered additional work. When classes are held in both the morning and afternoon, teachers can agree to increase the teaching component and reduce the non-teaching component to maximise earnings.
Qualifications Required:
Centre Managers.
Applicants should either be: DELTA or equivalent qualified teachers with experience of management at a British Council recognised school or: Proven Summer Camp Centre Managers without teaching qualifications who have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and can lead and manage a team of staff. We also welcome applicants who have had other summer camp management experience and are looking for the next step up. All applicants must be computer literate in word processing and spreadsheet programmes.
Director of Studies
Applicants should be: DELTA or equivalent qualified teachers. Computer literacy is required in word processing and spreadsheets. Additional training will be given in class management programmes. Experience of managing a team of teachers, running teacher development sessions and knowledge of materials is also essential. Experience of teaching juniors is beneficial. The DOS will act as duty manager at times so must be able to deal with the unexpected in a calm and responsible manner.
Residential/ Non-Residential Teachers
Applicants should be: CELTA, Trinity TESOL or B.Ed (with languages) qualified teachers, other qualifications meeting British Council recognised junior course standards will also be considered. Weekend TEFL courses and on-line courses with no observed teaching practice do not meet British Council standards. Experience of teaching juniors on a residential course would be beneficial but enthusiasm, motivation and being part of a team are just as important. We welcome teachers who are only available for shorter work periods starting at the end of June or the beginning of July.
Full board and lodging in modern, comfortable, single rooms in the residence is also included.
Holiday pay at 12.1% of contracted hours is added to final payments on termination of contract.
Salary
Centre Manager
£600 per week
12.1% holiday pay added to final payment at end of contract.
Performance bonus of up to £800 on successful completion of duties.
Full board and lodging in single room in the residence.
Director of Studies
£475 per week.
12.1% holiday pay added to final payment at end of contract.
Performance bonus of up to £500 on successful completion of duties.

Residential Teachers
Teachers will be paid from £290 per week for the standard 48 hour programme shown above, and upwards of £285-£300 per week for teachers who wish to maximise earnings during the summer by undertaking variable amounts of additional teaching duties @ £13.03 per lesson and non-teaching/supervisory duties @ £6.40 per hour.
Full board and lodging in modern, comfortable, single rooms in the residence is also included.
Holiday pay at 12.1% of contracted hours is added to final payments on termination of contract.
Higher salaries are payable to suitably qualified and experienced teachers undertaking additional responsibilities or senior staff appointments.
Teachers are required to attend an induction day one day before employment commences. Attendance at the induction day is paid at £6.40 per hour.
Non-residential Teachers.
Teachers are paid : £390.74 for a standard teaching/supervisory programme (20 lessons, 1.3 hours meetings and 19 hours supervisory) as shown above : £268.92 per week for the minimum timetable of 20 lessons plus meetings.
Actual hours worked are paid at £13.03 per lesson and £6.40 per hour for non-teaching/supervisory duties.
Increased pay is available for suitably qualified teachers or those who wish to increase their working hours.
Holiday pay at 12.1% of weekly worked hours up to a maximum of 37 hours per week is added to final salary payments on termination of contracts.
Teachers are required to attend an induction day one day before employment commences. Attendance at the induction day is paid at £6.40 per hour.
Further long-term contracts or an earlier start with St. Giles International may be available to suitable management candidates. Increased salaries are also available to suitably qualified and experienced teachers and returnees. Management will be required to attend weekend training sessions in Bournemouth in May before the start of the course. Travel costs and accommodation for this will be reimbursed.
